Just Three States Account for Close to 70 Percent of All U.S. Coronavirus Deaths

Just three states account for close to 70 percent of all deaths caused by the coronavirus in the United States, according to the latest data available Thursday afternoon.

New York, California, and Washington state have experienced the most deaths so far during the pandemic and are the only three states with more than 15 deaths. Combined, the three states have seen 112 coronavirus-related deaths, which is 66 percent of all deaths in America.

By Thursday afternoon, the country’s death toll had reached 168, according to data from The New York Times.

New York has the most confirmed COVID-19 cases with 5,303 cases while Washington state has the most deaths at 68.

Only four other states have seen more than five deaths, those being New Jersey (9), Florida (6), Louisiana (6), and Georgia (10).

The states with the most confirmed cases are:

  1. New York: 5,303
  2. Washington: 1,026
  3. California: 876
  4. New Jersey: 742
  5. Florida: 389

New York has seen a dramatic increase in its number of confirmed cases because of an increase in testing, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. The state had 2,382 confirmed cases Wednesday, which increased to 4,152 by Thursday morning. State officials then announced more than 1,000 additional cases Thursday afternoon, bringing the total to 5,303.

As of Thursday, the United States had at least 10,822 confirmed cases across every state, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories.

The states with the fewest confirmed cases are:

  1. West Virginia: 2
  2. Alaska: 6
  3. Idaho: 11
  4. South Dakota: 11
  5. Montana: 12

President Donald Trump announced during a Thursday press briefing that the anti-malarial drug chloroquine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a possible treatment for the coronavirus. FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said the drug will be used in a clinical trial for patients with COVID-19.

“We are going to win, sooner rather than later,” the president wrote on Twitter Thursday morning.
